In
tumultuous 1968, Danilo Kis, a playwright of the Atelier 212 theatre
at the time, when urged to translate Euripides Electra, wrote verse
drama inspired by the myth of the famous ancient heroine. The murder
Electra commits in protest reflected well the then rebellious turmoil
as well as the revolution in the interpretation of the human psyche,
which characterized the 20th century. Neda Spasojevic excelled
in the role of Electra, Misa Janketic in the role of Orestes, and
Ksenija Jovanovic, naturally, in the role of Clytemnestra.
For years, Kis’ play existed only in memories, until Jagos
Markovic had this vision, logically selecting the Powder Storage
as the theatre venue for this work. Thus from the dark subconscious
of drama artists led by Jagos Markovic, Kis’s “Electra” comes
into the light once again.
