Clarinetist Bogdan Rankovic
is an academic musician, whose career is primarily dominated
by his long cooperation with artist Boris Kovac of the Pannonian
region. Since the late 1980s, the two artists have realised
several albums for a number of renowned local and foreign companies.
Rankovic's independent project "Rafting Through Serbia's History"
has brought unexpected refreshment onto the local ethno scene.
A clarinet and flute, accompanied by a classical string quartet,
compose the ideal team for an atypical interpretation of the
Serbian civic music tradition from the late 19th and early
20th centuries. The project "Rafting Through Serbia's History"
is not only a mere performance of the almost century old pieces,
but it also creates a completely new sound based on characteristic
melodies and rhythm, reminding us of "the acoustic practice"
of that time, it also unifies in a stylish fashion the music
that was played in kafanas (Serbian type restaurants with bohemian
spirit), salons, and hotels.
