who is seriously ill. The band will be playing his songs. After
a 21-year break, they made a comeback a year-and-a-half ago.
This is their farewell tour, but also the biggest one ever,
and, according to reports, they sound extremely fresh.
Captain Beefheart is the stage name of acclaimed vocalist/musician
Don Van Vliet, whose bizzare and innovative sounds have influenced
and inspired countless bands despite reciving little mainstream
attention.
Van Vliet formed a blues-rock band called the Magic Band
in 1964. After gaining a local following, official music industry
rejected his strange and complex music. However, working with
Frank Zappa's Straigth Records label, Beefheart triumphantly
returned with 1969's Trout Mask Replica, which has since received
enormouse praise from rock critics. Blending jazz, blues and
rock to create avant-garde music that challenged listeners,
Beefheart released Lick My Decals Off,
Baby, Cler Spot, The Spotlight Kid, Shiny Beast (Bat Chain
Puller), Doc at the Radar Station and Ice
Cream for Crow, and in 1982. surprised his
fans announcing retirement from music.
Reunited in 2003, at the invitation of Simpson's creator
Matt Groening, to perform at his Los Angeles All Tomorrow's
Parties Festival, Captain Beefheart's legendary group, the
Magic band, feauturing key members John "Drumbo" French,
Gary "Mantis" Lucas, Denny "Feelers Reebo"Walley
and Mark "Rockette Morton" Boston, start their biggest
tour since reforming in June 2004. playing classic tracks from
all the best albums, as well as introducing the odd new composition.
They are "still boggling the mind after decades of imitation".
