Hans Sachs was born a tailor’s
son in 1494 in Nuremberg. He was apprenticed as a shoemaker,
but also wrote poetry that was largely influenced by Renaissance
writing. His works betray remnants of the medieval way of thinking
and attitudes. Commenting on the social and political turbulence
of that time, Hans Sachs was a poet of the poor and the injured.
He used humour, ridiculing laziness, naïve beliefs, stupid
prejudices, lies and gluttony. He laughed with his mouth full,
but always honestly, and humanely, imbued with love toward
humanity. His work is associated with contemporary political
changes in Germany and therefore it naturally displays a vernacular
character, along with a sharp Protestant relationship toward
feudal and church hierarchy. Hans Sachs was an authentic representative
of the imminent epoch.
The Promena (Change) has existed and worked at the Novi Sad
Art Academy for some 25 years. Students of acting and direction
from the Novi Sad Academy, who wanted to present their works
outside the classroom, founded it. The list of actors and directors
who have had their appearance at the Promena is long, as well
as the list of shows it has performed. The theatre has appeared
at numerous festivals and won numerous awards (Bitef, MES,
Sarajevo, Mot Skopje…). "Whipping" is the
theatre's most recent project and even while it slowly
begins to live its life on the boards of many theatres throughout
Serbia, the Promena is preparing its new plays...
