The idea that a theater is possible wherever there is an
audience and that urban person related themes are best conveyed
in the street, in a kafana (Serbian style restaurant with
bohemian spirit), shop, bus, underground passage... are the
postulates of Ister Theater, founded in 1994, with the aim
of researching, combining, and applying the dance and drama
expression techniques.
Space, as a location of communication, is among the most
important elements determining the work on the performances
cherished by Ister Theater. The unexploited, undiscovered,
original, and insufficiently known theatre locations, which
are inspiring and interesting for creative work, are much
closer to the audience as they do not limit the viewers'
participation to the passive watching of a performance in
theatre halls, but rather render an interactive theatre experience.
The Ister Theater summer performance A Wedding Party (Serbian
Style), in a humorous and slightly ironic manner, deals with
the forgotten customs of the Serbs, which have nowadays been
transformed into show business and a commercial environment
that has no traditional values and that mocks and humiliates
the tradition. The first act of the performance A Wedding
Party (Serbian Style), starts with the wedding of a couple
in a Belgrade municipality building, while in the second
act, the wedding guests walk along the Belgrade main streets
heading to their final destination, that is, a kafana, where
the third act unfolds.
