Pupin – The Story of a Great Man
Monodrama by Fuad Tabučić
Text: Ružica Vasić
Performed by: Fuad Tabučić
Directed by: Fuad Tabučić
The theatre production Pupin, based on Mihajlo Pupin’s autobiographical work From Immigrant to Inventor (From Pastures to Scientist), for which he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1924, brings the life of one of Serbia’s greatest scientists closer to contemporary audiences.
As the first part of a planned trilogy, the play focuses on Pupin’s childhood and education: from his early years in the village of Idvor and his schooling in Pančevo, through his youthful adventures in Prague, to his arrival in the United States and the period just before beginning his studies at Columbia University.
The narrative is framed through the story of a father and his fourteen-year-old daughter. Faced with her desire for the latest mobile phone, the father recounts episodes from Pupin’s life, stepping into different roles and scenes from the scientist’s extraordinary journey. By drawing parallels between Pupin’s experiences and the challenges of modern life, he seeks to spark his daughter’s interest in the life and achievements of this remarkable man while emphasizing enduring values such as perseverance, dedication, and personal responsibility.
At its core, the performance conveys the message that every person has their own star to follow—a dream worth pursuing wholeheartedly and with unwavering determination.
